Residential proxy

Home Glossary

Residential proxy

A residential proxy routes traffic through an IP address that an internet service provider assigned to a household. To websites, the traffic looks like it comes from an ordinary home connection.

Residential vs datacenter

Datacenter addresses are fast and cheap but easy to recognise as hosting addresses. Residential addresses look like normal home users and usually cost more, often billed by traffic.

Choosing a provider

  • Ask how the provider sources its addresses; reputable providers get consent from the people whose connections they use.
  • Check that you can pick a country or city.
  • Decide whether you need a static address or a rotating one.
